helen laTham
Soprano
Born in Preston Lancashire, Helen Latham gained her music degree from the University of Huddersfield, studying with Paul Wade and her Post Graduate Diploma in vocal studies from Birmingham Conservatoire, studying with Anne Dawson. Whilst studying, Helen was a finalist in both the Ashleyan Opera Prize 2009/2010 and the Mario Lanza Prize 2009/2010. She has participated in master classes with Wynn Davis, Richard Jackson and Sally Burgess.
Roles have included; Fox Cub (Cunning Little Vixen) BC opera, Gretel (Hansel and Gretel )and Michaela (Carmen) for North Star Opera. She has also performed Miss Jessel (Turn of the Screw), Anne Truelove (The Rake’s Progress), Mimi (La Boheme) for BC scenes, Gilda (Rigoletto) for North Star Opera scenes and Micaela (Carmen) for Opera 74. Concert engagements have included Handel’s Messiah for Burnley Municipal Choir, Haydn’s Mariazeller Mass for the Pennine Spring Music Festival and most recently she sang with Bolton Choral Union.
Most recently, Helen has sung the role of Zerlina Don Giovanni', with Opera Seria for their 2016 tour. This will end in Buxton this month. She has also sung with Heritage Opera in their production of Madame Butterfly. Forthcoming engagements include the role of Liu for Opera Seria’s production of Turandot in October 2016.
Helen’s community based work began with WNO Max where she performed the role of Nurse Notes for their ‘Singing Doctor’s project, based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Alongside this, also with WNO Max, Helen had the pleasure of working with expectant mothers, helping them to write lullabies for their unborn children. She now looks forward to continuing her community based work as Outreach Opera progresses futher.
